Getting Your LEGO® Sales Ready for Tax Time

Brick Books does not do your tax. It gets a year of small marketplace orders into the shape your accountant, or you, need.

Start your 14-day free trial with your own books. No card, no account, and nothing to cancel. Or open the demo, the real program with a made-up seller's books in it. One payment of $79 USD, plus any applicable taxes.

To be clear

Brick Books does not complete tax forms, calculate what tax you owe, decide what you are allowed to claim, or file anything with a tax authority. Tax rules vary by country and by business. For advice about your own situation, talk to an accountant or your tax authority.

What Your Accountant Usually Needs

  • Your sales, broken down by where you sold
  • Your costs, including marketplace and payment fees
  • Postage: what buyers paid you and what you paid to send
  • The value of the stock you still had at year end
  • Business travel, such as post office runs
  • Receipts to back it all up
  • If you are registered for sales tax, GST or VAT: what you collected and paid
  • A clear note of anything not yet done

How Brick Books Gets You There

During the year your BrickLink, Brick Owl and Square orders come in with goods, postage and fees already separated. Receipts are filed against their entries, and post office runs go into the travel log as you make them.

At year end, Brick Books builds one spreadsheet with profit and loss, trading stock, the full ledger and sales by marketplace, plus a zip of your receipts. The cover sheet states what has not been done as clearly as what has.

If you are registered for sales tax, the Sales Tax screen summarises your own records by quarter and month. It is a summary, not a return: see the sales tax guide.

Do a Stocktake

For resellers, closing stock is the figure most likely to make a year look wrong. Stock bought but not yet sold is still owned by the business, so leaving it out can make a good year look much worse than it was.

Count what is left at year end and enter it. The stocktake guide walks through it.

Start Before the Year Ends

The easiest tax time is the one where the records were kept as you went. Brick Books can bring in your order history from earlier in the year, so it is not too late to start now. The year end guide shows what the pack contains.
