Terms and Licence

What you are buying, what you can do with it, and the limits, in plain English.

Last updated 29 August 2026

These terms apply when you buy, download or use Brick Books.

They are meant to be readable. Buying or activating Brick Books means you agree to them.

Brick Books is sold by The Brick Box Australia, ABN 93 328 382 099, in Western Australia. Payments are processed by Lemon Squeezy, who act as the merchant of record for the transaction.

What You Are Buying

You are buying a licence to use Brick Books.

You are not buying ownership of the software itself. Brick Books, its source code, design and other intellectual property remain the property of The Brick Box Australia.

Your licence gives you the right to use the version you bought indefinitely, subject to these terms. There is no subscription and no renewal fee.

What that means in practice

Install Brick Books, use it for your business, and keep using the version you bought for as long as you want.

Your copy does not depend on this website remaining online, and ordinary use does not require a permanent internet connection. Your licence is checked locally when Brick Books starts.

When you first activate a licence on a computer, Brick Books contacts the licence service to register that activation when a connection is available.

Brick Books may also periodically check for available updates and whether a licence has been withdrawn. Disabling update checks does not stop you opening or accessing books you have already created.

Your Licence Key

After buying Brick Books, you receive a licence key.

Keep it somewhere safe and do not share it with anyone else.

Your licence does not expire. There is no renewal date and no recurring payment required to continue using the version you bought.

Two computers

One licence may be activated on up to two computers at a time for the same business. That is intended to cover something like your main computer and a laptop.

If you try to activate the same licence on another computer while both activations are already in use, Brick Books will ask you to contact me first.

Replacing a computer

If you replace a computer, reinstall Windows, lose a machine or have one die completely, email support@brickbooks.app.

The old activation can be removed so the replacement can take its place.

There is no charge for this and no limit on legitimate replacement requests. A dead computer should not mean buying Brick Books again.

If the licence service cannot be reached

Temporary internet or server problems should not lock you out of your own records.

Brick Books is designed so that losing access to the licence service does not prevent you from opening books you already have. Where activation information needs to be confirmed online, Brick Books can do that when a connection becomes available.

What Needs an Active Licence

An active licence is required for Brick Books to do new work such as:

What Never Gets Locked Away

Access to records you have already created is different.

Even if a licence is no longer active, you can still access the information already in your books. That includes:

Your existing records remain accessible.

Why it is built this way

Business records may need to be kept for years, and you or your accountant may need them long after the software was purchased.

Brick Books is deliberately designed so that a licensing issue cannot become a way of holding your existing records hostage. Your data remains yours.

What You May Do

Your licence allows you to:

There is no limit based on how large your business becomes.

What You May Not Do

You may not:

Nothing in these terms is intended to remove any right you have under applicable law that cannot legally be excluded, including any lawful rights relating to interoperability or software examination.

A serious breach of these licence conditions may result in the licence being withdrawn.

Brick Books Is Bookkeeping Software, Not an Accountant

Please read this section carefully

Brick Books is a record-keeping and bookkeeping tool.

It does not provide tax, accounting, financial or legal advice.

It does not decide:

Brick Books works with the information entered or imported into it. Its reports can therefore only be as accurate as the underlying records and the settings used to prepare them.

Check your figures before relying on them for anything important, and use a suitably qualified professional where appropriate.

Nothing on this website, in the guides or inside Brick Books is a representation that your records will satisfy the tax or reporting requirements of every country or every business.

Third-Party Services

Brick Books can connect to third-party services such as BrickLink, Brick Owl, Square, PayPal and Stripe.

The Brick Box Australia does not operate those services and does not control their availability, rules, APIs or future changes.

Unless expressly stated otherwise, Brick Books' marketplace integrations are designed to read information rather than alter your listings, inventory, orders or funds.

A third-party provider may change or discontinue an interface that Brick Books relies on. I will make reasonable efforts to keep supported integrations working, but I cannot guarantee that another company's service will remain available indefinitely or continue operating in the same way.

Your use of those services is also subject to their own terms and policies.

Updates and Future Versions

Updates to Brick Books 1 are included

When you buy Brick Books 1, fixes and improvements released for Brick Books 1 are included at no additional charge.

There is no annual maintenance fee, subscription or twelve-month update period.

If a supported integration needs to be adjusted because a marketplace changes its API, that kind of maintenance is treated as a Brick Books 1 update while that version remains supported.

A future Brick Books 2 may be separate

If Brick Books is ever substantially rebuilt into a new major version, that may be sold as a separate product. The distinction is:

No Brick Books 2 currently exists or is promised.

If one is ever released, buying it will be optional.

Existing Brick Books owners would be offered a reduced upgrade price.

Your existing copy remains yours

Whether or not another major version is ever released:

If support for an older major version eventually ends, that does not by itself disable the copy already installed on your computer.

Backups and Your Data

Brick Books keeps your books on your own computer.

The Brick Box Australia does not hold a server-side copy of your books and cannot restore data that exists only on a computer you have lost or damaged.

Brick Books includes backup and restore tools, but you are responsible for keeping suitable backups, preferably including a copy somewhere other than the computer running Brick Books.

Your marketplace and payment-provider credentials are stored separately from your books and are not included in ordinary Brick Books backups.

Consumer Rights and Warranties

Software can contain defects, and no software can be guaranteed to operate without interruption or error in every environment.

Nothing in these terms excludes, restricts or modifies any consumer guarantee, remedy or other right that cannot lawfully be excluded. In Australia, this includes rights you may have under the Australian Consumer Law.

Where the law allows liability to be limited, The Brick Box Australia limits its liability to the extent permitted by that law.

Nothing in this section limits any right to a repair, replacement, refund, compensation or other remedy where applicable law says that right cannot be excluded.

When a Licence May Be Withdrawn

A licence may be withdrawn where:

Withdrawal prevents the licence-dependent functions described above from doing new work.

It does not delete, modify or prevent access to records already stored in your books. You can still open your existing books and retrieve your data.

That distinction applies even where a licence was withdrawn following a refund or chargeback.

Refunds

Refunds are covered by the separate refund policy, which forms part of these terms.

Nothing in that policy or these terms limits any refund or other remedy you are entitled to under applicable consumer law.

Changes to These Terms

These terms may be updated from time to time for future purchases or future versions of Brick Books.

The terms that applied when you bought your licence continue to govern that purchase unless a change is required by law or you expressly agree otherwise.

Updating these terms on the website does not retrospectively remove rights already given to you.

Governing Law

These terms are governed by the laws of Western Australia, Australia.

If mandatory consumer protection or other laws in the place where you live also apply, nothing in this clause is intended to exclude rights those laws give you and which cannot lawfully be excluded.
