What Brick Books keeps on your computer, what leaves it, and what information this website receives.
Last updated 15 October 2026
Your books stay on your own computer.
Brick Books does not upload your ledger, figures, receipts, customer records or business data to a Brick Books server, because there is no Brick Books cloud account holding any of it.
There is no analytics inside the program, no usage tracking and no automatic crash reporting.
A small number of things do communicate over the internet: licence activation, optional update and licence-status checks, problem reports you choose to send, marketplace and payment-provider connections, and optional distance lookups for the travel log. They are all explained below.
Brick Books runs on your own computer. Specifically:
There are three situations where the program itself may send information to Brick Books.
When you first enter your licence key, Brick Books sends the licence key and an installation identifier so the licence can be limited to the permitted number of computers.
The installation identifier is generated for Brick Books. It is not intended to contain your computer name, your business name, anything from your books, or your marketplace credentials.
If the licence service cannot be reached at the time, Brick Books is designed not to lock you out simply because the internet or server is unavailable.
Brick Books can periodically check whether a newer version is available and whether a licence has been withdrawn.
That request may include information needed to perform the check, such as:
It does not include your ledger entries, sales figures, receipts, customer names or marketplace credentials.
You can switch automatic update checks off under Licence & Help.
Brick Books sends a problem report only when you choose to send one.
You are shown what will be submitted before it leaves your computer.
The reporting system is designed to remove sensitive technical values such as licence keys, API credentials, usernames and local file paths, and it does not deliberately include your bookkeeping figures, transactions, customer names or business records.
If you type personal or business information into the description yourself, that information will of course be included because it forms part of the message you asked to send.
A problem report is anonymous unless you ask otherwise. If you tick the box asking for a reply and type an email address, that address is sent with the report so the problem can be answered. It is shown to you before you send, it is used only to reply about that report, and it is not added to any mailing list.
When you synchronise information from BrickLink, Brick Owl, Square, Stripe, PayPal or another supported service, Brick Books communicates directly with that provider.
The connection does not pass through a Brick Books server.
Information is exchanged with that provider as necessary to retrieve the records you asked Brick Books to synchronise. Those companies handle that information under their own terms and privacy policies.
Your API credentials remain on your computer and are used to authenticate those direct connections.
Receipt reading is off unless you add your own Anthropic key. If you do, each receipt you add (dropped onto the Receipts screen, or picked up from your Receipts Inbox) is sent to Anthropic so the date, shop, total and tax can be read from it. That means the picture or PDF of the receipt leaves your computer.
Anthropic handles that file under its own terms and privacy policy, and usage is billed to your own Anthropic account. If you leave the key blank, no receipt is ever sent. You can remove the key at any time.
If you ask Brick Books to calculate the road distance between places, the location information needed for that calculation is sent to the mapping service used for the lookup.
Brick Books then remembers the result locally so the same route does not need to be looked up every time.
Distance lookup is optional. If you would rather not send a location to a mapping provider, you can enter the distance yourself.
The website is separate from the Brick Books program.
If you send a message through the website, I receive whatever information you choose to enter, usually your email address and your message.
That information is used to read and respond to your enquiry and to keep any support history reasonably necessary to deal with it. It is not sold or rented for advertising.
If you share a review on the reviews page, I receive what you enter: your review, the name you want shown, your store name, store link, country, an optional logo and shop size, and the email address you bought Brick Books with.
The email address is used only to check that you are a Brick Books customer and, if needed, to contact you about your review. It is never published. Everything else is shown on the reviews page once the review has been checked, because you agreed to that when you sent it. You can ask for your review to be changed or removed at any time.
Payments are processed through Lemon Squeezy, which acts as the merchant of record for the purchase.
Lemon Squeezy collects the information required to process the transaction. Depending on what is supplied at checkout, its order records can include information such as your name, email address, country and postal code.
I do not receive your full payment-card number.
I may receive or retrieve purchase information needed to:
Lemon Squeezy's own privacy policy governs the information it processes as part of the payment transaction.
There are none. This website hosts its own typefaces, images and stylesheets, so opening a page here contacts brickbooks.app and nothing else.
That is deliberate. Loading typefaces from a font service, which is what most sites do, would mean your browser announcing itself to another company every time you read a page. The font files are served from here instead.
The program does the same. Brick Books carries its own typefaces, so opening your books does not fetch anything from anybody.
Brick Books does not deliberately use:
The site does not set any non-essential cookies of its own, so there is no Brick Books marketing or analytics cookie to consent to.
Like most websites, the hosting infrastructure may create technical server logs when pages are requested. Those logs can contain information such as:
They are used for operating, securing and troubleshooting the website, not to build a marketing profile of visitors.
The exact retention period may depend on the hosting provider and its configuration.
Information is kept only as long as there is a reasonable business, support or legal reason to keep it. For example:
Australian business records commonly need to be retained for at least five years, although some records must be kept longer.
You can contact me to ask what personal information Brick Books holds about you, to ask for incorrect information to be corrected, or to request deletion where it is appropriate and legally possible. Email support@brickbooks.app.
Some information may need to be retained despite a deletion request where there is a legal obligation to keep it, such as certain transaction or tax records.
If Australian privacy law applies to the business and you believe your personal information has been mishandled, you may also have the right to make a complaint to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner.
Not every Australian small business is automatically covered by the Privacy Act. Most businesses with annual turnover of $3 million or less are exempt unless one of the specified exceptions applies.
If you are in another country, additional privacy rights may apply under the laws that cover you and the processing involved.
Because Brick Books itself stores your bookkeeping data on your computer rather than on mine, requests about the contents of your books usually have a simple answer: I do not have them.
Brick Books is business bookkeeping software and is not directed at children.
If this privacy policy changes, the date at the top will be updated.
Material changes affecting how personal information is handled will be reflected here.
