Sales Tax

For sellers registered for VAT, GST, sales tax or an equivalent tax. If you are not registered, you can skip this guide.

If you turned sales tax on during setup, the Sales Tax screen shows what your books say you collected on sales and paid on purchases, broken down by quarter and by month.

Not registered? Skip it

Leave sales tax switched off under Set Up and those parts of Brick Books stay out of the way. Nothing else changes.

What the Screen Shows

That second list is mainly there to help you spot things worth checking.

What It Is Not

This is a summary, not a tax return

Brick Books adds up what is already recorded in your books.

It does not decide whether something should be taxable, apply every rule in your country, prepare a formal tax return, or file anything with a tax authority.

Those rules vary too much between countries, businesses and transactions for Brick Books to pretend otherwise.

Use the Sales Tax screen as a clear summary of your own records and as a starting point for whatever reporting your country requires.

If the Numbers Look Wrong

Old entries have no tax recorded

Tax treatment is worked out when an entry is recorded.

If you change your registration date later, entries that already exist keep the tax treatment they had at the time.

The Sales Tax screen highlights sales in categories that would normally carry tax but currently have none recorded. Open an entry from there, check it, and correct it if needed.

There is no bulk recalculation, so getting your registration date right during setup can save a lot of work later.

A category has the wrong treatment

Not every type of income or cost is treated the same way for sales tax. Some may be exempt, zero-rated, outside the system, or subject to another treatment depending on where you operate.

Brick Books uses a tax treatment for each category to decide how it should be handled.

If a category appears to be wrong for your country or circumstances, email support@brickbooks.app and tell me which one. I can then check whether the category itself needs adjusting.
